Ramallah: Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced progress towards a trade agreement with the United States following a productive discussion with President Donald Trump earlier this week. The conversation, which took place on Wednesday, included notable participation from Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco and Economy Secretary Marcelo Ebrard.
According to Anadolu Agency, Sheinbaum refrained from divulging specific details from the conversation, stating that information would remain confidential until a formal agreement is reached. The primary focus of Mexico's negotiations is to secure reduced tariffs from the US on critical exports such as steel, aluminum, and automobiles. Additionally, discussions are centered around the rules of origin and reinforcing North American supply chains.
These negotiations are part of the ongoing review of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which dictates the trade dynamics among the three North American countries. This year has seen multiple rounds of negotiations between Mexico and the US, with the third round in July addressing topics such as economic security, labor, agriculture, electronic payment services, and key industrial sectors.
A significant point of contention in the talks is the rules of origin, especially concerning products with components sourced from outside North America. The US has advocated for stringent regional sourcing requirements, while Mexico aims to maintain its access to the US market and safeguard complex production chains.
