Ankara:European Council President Antonio Costa has called for an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine, urging the international community to exert influence on Russia to help end the conflict.

According to Anadolu Agency, Costa addressed a UN Security Council meeting on Ukraine, emphasizing that diplomacy and a ceasefire are the only paths forward. He acknowledged that peace efforts have not yet achieved a breakthrough but stressed the importance of continuing diplomatic efforts. Any resolution, he stated, must respect Ukraine's sovereignty, territorial integrity, and right to self-determination, while also ensuring credible security guarantees.

Costa criticized Russia for escalating the conflict, highlighting attacks on Ukrainian civilian infrastructure and threats to the security of EU member states. He described these actions as a dangerous escalation that is unacceptable.

Furthermore, Costa pointed out that Russian strikes on the port of Odesa have impacted global food security, particularly affecting African countries. He noted that Russia has failed in its objectives to occupy Ukraine, change the government in Kyiv, or diminish Europe's commitment to supporting Ukraine.

He concluded by urging international influence on Russia, expressing hope for achieving a just and lasting peace in Ukraine and Europe by the time of their meeting next year.
