Rabat:Polling stations opened across Morocco as voters began electing members of the House of Representatives.

According to Anadolu Agency, voting commenced at 8 am and will conclude at 7 pm nationwide. Official figures indicate that 15.8 million voters are registered for the elections, with 28 political formations vying for 395 seats. A total of 7,288 candidates are competing across the country.

Observers have been deployed in cities like Rabat to monitor the electoral process. These observers, who document any potential irregularities without interference, prepare detailed reports based on their findings.

The Special Committee for the Accreditation of Election Observers has accredited 3,206 observers, including 200 international representatives, to oversee the elections. Of these, 783 are from the National Human Rights Council, while 2,023 represent various Moroccan civil society associations.

This election marks the 12th parliamentary polls since Morocco's independence and the sixth under King Mohammed VI. Preliminary results are expected from the Interior Ministry in the early hours of Thursday.

The leading party will initiate consultations to form a governing majority, needing at least 198 seats. The king appoints the head of government from this party, with government members proposed by the head of government.

The new government will address several issues, including projects for co-hosting the 2030 FIFA World Cup. In the previous elections, the National Rally of Independents led with 102 seats, forming a coalition government with the Authenticity and Modernity Party and the Istiqlal Party, headed by Aziz Akhannouch.
