New York:Belgium and Rwanda have resumed diplomatic relations following a "process of frank discussions," Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot announced Tuesday. According to Anadolu Agency, Prevot emphasized the significance of this development amidst global tensions, highlighting the announcement made in New York, the city symbolizing multilateralism and dialogue. He expressed confidence in establishing a positive agenda that would benefit both countries' citizens and build upon strong interpersonal ties. The resumption of ties is the result of an effort characterized by mutual respect and dialogue with Rwandan Foreign Minister Olivier Nduhungirehe. The two nations have agreed on the importance of systematic dialogue, especially concerning disagreements such as the conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo). Prevot clarified that restoring diplomatic relations does not imply abandoning Belgium's stance on key issues. He stressed the importance of structured dialogue channels and reiter ated Belgium's commitment to defending the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the DRC. Belgium also aims to leverage its regional expertise to support mediation efforts and will continue to advocate for strict adherence to commitments made in the Doha and Washington processes. The announcement comes 18 months after the two countries severed ties due to a dispute linked to the conflict in eastern DR Congo, with plans to reopen their embassies soon.
