Ankara: Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum received her South Korean counterpart, Lee Jae-myung, at the National Palace on Thursday to discuss investment, trade and new agreements, according to media reports.

According to Anadolu Agency,The meeting is part of Lee's three-day state visit to Mexico, the first by a South Korean president since 2010.

Sheinbaum said before the meeting that the two leaders would discuss commercial, cultural and educational issues.

'We are going to sign a memorandum of understanding on these issues; South Korean companies have several investments planned in our country,' she said.

Lee's agenda also includes the signing of the Mexico-South Korea Action Plan 2026-2030, a roadmap aimed at strengthening economic, educational and scientific cooperation over the next five years.

The Mexican president said she would meet with South Korean business representatives following her meeting with Lee to discuss investment plans and questions about operating conditions in Mexico.

The talks also cover cooperation in energy and minerals, artificial intelligence, digital technology, aerospace, defense and cultural exchanges.

Lee has expressed an interest in strengthening economic ties with Mexico and resuming negotiations on a bilateral economic agreement.

South Korea is one of Mexico's major trade and investment partners, with more than 2,000 South Korean companies operating in the country.

Mexico has sought to attract greater foreign investment and strengthen supply chains, particularly in sectors such as automobiles, electronics and advanced manufacturing.

Lee is also scheduled to attend K-Expo Mexico 2026 and a business forum aimed at strengthening commercial ties between Mexican and South Korean companies.

The visit comes as both governments seek to expand cooperation beyond trade and investment, including in emerging technologies and other strategic sectors.
