New York:Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand announced she is investigating whether Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is under an international arrest warrant, will travel through Canadian airspace on Thursday.

According to Anadolu Agency, Anand stated she had requested information regarding this specific flyover from her department, as she was unaware of it before attending the United Nations meeting. However, she did not comment on whether Canada considers Netanyahu a war criminal.

Anand emphasized Canada's commitment to respecting international court decisions and supporting those suffering in regions like Gaza, Palestine, and the West Bank. Her comments followed an earlier statement by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who declared last October that Netanyahu would face arrest if he entered Canada.

Netanyahu, traveling as a foreign dignitary on a state aircraft, must obtain diplomatic clearance from Ottawa three working days before entering Canadian airspace. The International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant in November 2024, citing "reasonable grounds" for their alleged responsibility for war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Gaza Strip.

Netanyahu is scheduled to speak at the UN General Assembly in New York on Thursday.
