Ankara:EU leaders have praised Pakistan's diplomatic efforts in mediating between the United States and Iran, as attempts to ease tensions and resume talks were heightened during the UN General Assembly in New York.

According to Anadolu Agency, European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen met with Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in New York during the 81st session of the General Assembly. They expressed gratitude for Pakistan's initiative to mediate in the conflict between the US and Iran.

The discussions among Sharif, Costa, and von der Leyen covered regional and global developments, emphasizing the importance of dialogue, diplomacy, international law, and peaceful dispute resolution. This call for peaceful conflict resolution occurred against the backdrop of ongoing tensions between the US and Iran, as well as the Russia-Ukraine war.

The EU leaders highlighted Pakistan's significant role in promoting de-escalation and peaceful conflict resolution. Islamabad has been a key mediator between the US and Iran since the US and Israel initiated a military campaign against Iran in February.

The meeting also included a review of the comprehensive bilateral relationship, with Prime Minister Sharif affirming Pakistan's dedication to strengthening its partnership with the European Union and fully implementing the Pakistan-EU Strategic Engagement Plan.

Costa and von der Leyen reiterated the EU's appreciation for its partnership with Pakistan, noting that the Strategic Engagement Plan reflects the partnership's scope and shared commitment to democracy, rule of law, human rights, and civic space.
