Atlanta:Chengdu Two giant pandas have departed China for a decade-long stay at Zoo Atlanta as part of a loan agreement between China and the United States. The pandas, named Ping Ping and Fu Shuang, left Chengdu following an announcement by Chinese President Xi Jinping during a summit with US President Donald Trump in Washington.

According to Anadolu Agency, the agreement for the panda loan was revealed in April, though the exact date of their arrival had not been determined earlier. Ping Ping, a male, and Fu Shuang, a female, were both born in 2020 at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding.

Zoo Atlanta has been without giant pandas since its previous pair left in 2024. The panda loan is one of the tangible results from Xi's state visit to the US, highlighting efforts of goodwill between the two nations despite unresolved issues between Washington and Beijing.

China has historically used panda loan programs as a diplomatic tool to foster relationships with other countries. President Xi referred to the program as a symbol of "friendship between the Chinese and Americans."
