Morocco Appoints First Female Prime Minister

Rabat:Moroccan King Mohammed VI has appointed Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri as the country's prime minister, marking a historic first for a woman in this role.

According to Anadolu Agency, Mansouri's Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM) won the parliamentary elections held on September 23, securing 97 seats. The king's appointment followed the tradition of selecting the prime minister from the party with the most seats in the 395-seat House of Representatives. The Ministry of the Royal Household, Protocol and Chancellery announced the appointment in a statement.

King Mohammed VI received Mansouri at the Royal Palace in Rabat, where she was tasked with forming a new government. Mansouri, who is the coordinator of PAM's collective leadership, expressed that the appointment is a "historic moment" for Morocco and a source of pride for women in the country.

She plans to immediately start consultations within her party and with other political parties to establish a government. Mansouri emphasized the importance of this stage and the high expectations of citizens, particularly the youth, by promising a program with realistic and concrete solutions.

In the same election, the National Rally of Independents (RNI) secured 66 seats, the Istiqlal Party won 65 seats, and the Justice and Development Party (PJD) garnered 54 seats. A majority in the House of Representatives requires at least 198 seats, necessitating coalition-building efforts.

Mansouri is recognized for her leadership in the PAM, which was founded in 2008, and became Marrakech's first female mayor in 2009. She leads the party alongside Mehdi Bensaid, minister of youth and culture, and Fatima Saadi.
