Berlin:Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has called for a freeze in the ongoing hostilities in Ukraine to pave the way for negotiations.
According to Anadolu Agency, Tokayev made these remarks during a news conference with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. He acknowledged that an immediate termination of the conflict might be unattainable given the current situation.
Tokayev emphasized Kazakhstan's commitment to the United Nations Charter and the principle of territorial integrity. He expressed high regard for the Ukrainian people and their cultural heritage, clarifying that while an immediate end to the war may not be feasible, a temporary halt in fighting could facilitate diplomatic negotiations.
He conveyed gratitude to Russian President Vladimir Putin for understanding his stance, describing Putin as "an outstanding statesman" and the most suitable political leader for both Central Asia and beyond.
Kazakhstan, Tokayev noted, shares a significant border with Russia and has a substantial ethnic Russian population, which necessitates friendly relations with Moscow. He also stressed the importance of peace and stability for Kazakhstan's success, maintaining that both Russia and Ukraine are considered good friends of Kazakhstan.
