Liverpool:British Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced plans to explore options for the UK's long-term relationship with the European Union, asserting that Brexit has negatively impacted the country. He made these remarks during the annual Labour Party Conference.
According to Anadolu Agency, Burnham emphasized that the UK, which left the EU in 2020 following a 2016 referendum, needs to decide on its future relationship with the EU, which remains its largest market. He plans to outline the available choices around an upcoming summit in an effort to find consensus and clarify the UK's future position in Europe.
Burnham also revealed that the Labour Party's next manifesto would commit to changing the UK's electoral system. This includes the formation of a new national commission on electoral reform, inviting participation from all political parties. He expressed commitment to ensuring that every vote counts and every voice is heard in the electoral process.
Further, Burnham introduced policies aimed at transforming Britain's path, covering areas such as water, housing, energy, and education. He acknowledged potential political repercussions for his policies but insisted on the necessity of taking bold steps to address ongoing issues, such as the privatization of essential services.
The prime minister highlighted that Environment Secretary Angela Eagle would propose a strengthened Water Bill to address issues related to water management, though he did not announce plans for nationalizing water companies. Additionally, Burnham discussed measures to reclaim homes from negligent landlords, lower energy prices, and reform the education system to balance academic and technical tracks.
In terms of economic strategy, Burnham advocated for nationalization and devolution, arguing that these could foster business growth. He reiterated the government's adherence to fiscal rules to manage borrowing and debt, and confirmed that any new policy changes would be considered only after the 2024 general election, with a view to possibly implementing them if Labour remains in power beyond 2029.
