Lin Yu-ting Secures Gold in Asian Games Boxing After Eligibility Controversy

Nishio:Taiwanese boxer Lin Yu-ting triumphed in the women's 60-kilogram category at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, clinching a gold medal two years after facing a gender eligibility issue at the Paris Olympics. Lin secured her victory against China's Yang Chengyu with a unanimous 5-0 decision at Nishio Gymnasium, marking her second gold medal at the Asian Games.

According to Anadolu Agency, Lin, along with Algeria's Imane Khelif, had previously won gold medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics amid ongoing disputes over their eligibility to compete in the women's category. The controversy arose when both boxers were disqualified from the 2023 world championships by the International Boxing Association, which cited failed eligibility tests.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC), which took over the oversight of boxing at the Paris Games after revoking the association's recognition, permitted Lin and Khelif to participate. The IOC criticized their 2023 disqualifications as "sudden and arbitrary."

In 2025, World Boxing, the governing authority for Olympic-level boxing, implemented a new eligibility policy mandating compulsory sex testing for athletes competing in the female category. Lin was authorized to compete in the female category earlier this year after an appeal by the Chinese Taipei Boxing Association was successful under World Boxing's eligibility guidelines.
