Brasilia:Brazil's attorney general has called for an investigation into an alleged US government funding program aimed at the Supreme Federal Court (STF), just days before the presidential election.
According to Anadolu Agency, Attorney General Jorge Messias announced that foreign political interests attempting to interfere in Brazilian institutions or sway decisions of Brazilian voters "cannot be tolerated."
The investigation request follows a report by The Guardian newspaper, which alleged that the US administration under President Donald Trump planned to allocate funds to a campaign opposing Brazil's top court. The report detailed a $1 million US grant for a project titled "Countering Lawfare and Censorship in Brazil," intended to support civil society groups opposing judicial overreach and censorship by the court.
Messias emphasized that the reported initiative is a significant concern for Brazilian sovereignty, especially given its timing during the electoral process. The attorney general's office has tasked the Federal Police and federal prosecutors with examining the origins, destinations, and purposes of the funds to determine if they constitute foreign interference in Brazil's political or electoral matters.
The alleged $1 million grant is part of a larger package exceeding $175 million from a US State Department human rights fund designated for projects worldwide, as reported by The Guardian.
This development occurs amidst ongoing tensions between supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro and the Supreme Court, notably involving Justice Alexandre de Moraes. Bolsonaro was sentenced to 27 years in prison after being convicted of trying to overturn the 2022 presidential election results.
As Brazil prepares for a presidential election on Sunday, with President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva seeking another term, Flavio Bolsonaro, the former president's son, is among the candidates. The US has not publicly confirmed whether the reported funding was intended to influence the election.
