Seoul:South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has called for a comprehensive investigation following a series of hacking attacks on major banks and financial institutions, which resulted in data breaches.
According to Anadolu Agency, the hacking incidents have targeted several prominent banks, including Hana Bank, KB Kookmin Bank, and Shinhan Bank, leading to the compromise of customer data. Shinhan Bank reported that the personal details of approximately 25,000 customers, such as names, phone numbers, and annual incomes, were leaked.
Yonhap sources indicate that the hackers employed advanced artificial intelligence tools in the attacks. Other banks, such as Woori Bank and NH Nonghyup Bank, also experienced similar hacking attempts.
Presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung conveyed that President Lee instructed authorities to prioritize the investigation and develop measures to address these cyber threats. In response to the situation, Financial Services Commission Chairman Lee Eog-weon and Financial Supervisory Service Governor Lee Chan-jin convened an emergency meeting with the heads of affected firms.
During the meeting, the FSC chairman noted that multiple security breaches had occurred across various financial sectors within a short period. Although no sensitive information for unauthorized payments was reportedly compromised, he emphasized the need for the financial sector to remain highly vigilant. He also highlighted the potential use of the leaked information in scams and did not dismiss the possibility of AI tools being involved in the hacking activities.
