Iran Executes Two Protesters Involved in Police Killings

Isfahan:Iran executed two protesters on Monday for their alleged involvement in the killing of police officers during anti-government protests in January, as reported by the judiciary.

According to Anadolu Agency, the judiciary-affiliated Mizan news agency identified the men as Alireza Sepahi and Alireza Raisi. Their death sentences were carried out after being upheld by the Supreme Court.

The Iranian authorities accused the two men of participating in incidents in Isfahan that led to the deaths of four police officers. The judiciary claimed that Sepahi set a police officer on fire while he was still alive, and that Raisi took part in attacks against security forces and incited violence.

The two men were convicted of using weapons to instill fear and insecurity, committing 'corruption on earth,' inciting violence, and various other national security offenses, according to Mizan.

The protests originally began on December 28, 2025, driven by a sharp decline in the Iranian currency and worsening economic conditions. These protests spread from Tehran to other cities, evolving into broader anti-government demonstrations.

The unrest intensified on January 8 and 9, with deadly clashes between protesters and security forces reported in several cities. During this time, public buildings and police vehicles were set on fire. In response, Iranian authorities imposed a nationwide internet shutdown and disrupted mobile communications.

Both Iranian authorities and rights groups reported hundreds of deaths and thousands of arrests during the protests, although their figures differed significantly.
