Jerusalem:Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has issued threats of further assassinations in the Gaza Strip, coinciding with President Isaac Herzog's warning of increasing internal divisions as Israel approaches its upcoming election.
According to Anadolu Agency, Netanyahu made the statements during a ceremony at Mount Herzl cemetery in Jerusalem. Reflecting on three years since the start of what has been described as Israel's genocidal war on Gaza, he asserted that tasks remain unfinished and vowed to prevent Hamas from governing the region.
The Gaza war has seen the Israeli army assassinate hundreds of Hamas leaders, resulting in civilian casualties. Since October 2023, Palestinian figures report over 74,000 Palestinians have been killed and more than 175,000 injured, with approximately 90% of Gaza's infrastructure destroyed.
Netanyahu, who has led the current government since late 2022, is perceived to head Israel's most right-wing administration in history. Domestically, he is on trial for corruption charges and is wanted by the International Court of Justice for alleged war crimes in Gaza.
President Herzog highlighted the growing societal divisions in Israel, particularly during the election campaign. He urged attention to the "flashing warning lights" indicating dangerous disputes and deep division within the country.
The upcoming legislative election on October 27 will be Israel's first since the Gaza war, with opposition parties intensifying efforts to replace Netanyahu's government through the election.
