UN Chief Calls on Developed Nations to Fulfill Climate Finance Commitments

Islamabad:UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called on developed nations to deliver on their commitments to provide finance and technology to build climate resilience ahead of COP31 in Trkiye.

According to Anadolu Agency, Guterres made these remarks during a joint press conference with Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar. He emphasized that while leadership from vulnerable developing countries is crucial, it cannot replace the responsibilities of developed nations.

Guterres pointed out that the G20 accounts for 80% of global emissions, highlighting the urgent need for significant emission reductions within this decade. He stressed the importance of the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities, urging all countries to contribute while developed nations respect their commitments. These include the agreements made at COP29 in Baku, where developed countries pledged to mobilize at least $300 billion annually for climate action in developing countries by 2035.

Recalling his visit to Pakistan in 2022 after devastating floods, Guterres noted that Pakistan is on the climate crisis frontlines, despite its minimal contribution to global emissions. He acknowledged the country's pivotal role in responding to climate challenges.

The COP31 conference is scheduled to take place in Antalya, Trkiye, from November 9 to 20.
