Rzeszow:Sweden will send a Patriot air defense system and approximately 100 military personnel to Poland to safeguard a NATO logistics hub that supports Ukraine. This move, announced by the Swedish Armed Forces, aims to protect the hub in Rzeszow from drones and missiles, a mission currently managed by the Netherlands.
According to Anadolu Agency, this operation is Sweden's most complex undertaking as a NATO ally, as stated by Sofia Westermark, commander of Sweden's Air Defense Regiment. The government-approved deployment is set to begin on December 1 and may continue for up to seven months, depending on future government decisions.
The location, which processes around 18,000 tons of equipment monthly, is deemed critical for Ukraine and NATO. Authorities believe there is a potential threat from Russia to disrupt activities at the hub. Westermark emphasized the importance of the site, noting that protecting it is crucial for both Ukraine and NATO.
Westermark also addressed concerns about the impact of the deployment on Sweden's domestic air defenses, acknowledging that some military resources would be stationed abroad. She reiterated that Sweden's current priority as a NATO member is to fulfill this mission in Poland.
