Ankara:MotoGP has announced that starting in the 2027 season, separate qualifying sessions and starting grids will be introduced for Sprint and Grand Prix races. This change comes after the introduction of Sprint races in 2023, which used a single Saturday qualifying session to set the starting grids for both race formats.
According to Anadolu Agency, The new schedule will kick off on Fridays with a 45-minute Free Practice 1, followed by a 30-minute Free Practice 2. This second session will no longer influence which riders advance directly to the Grand Prix qualifying. Instead, the day will conclude with a 15-minute Sprint qualifying session for all riders, setting the grid for Saturday's Sprint race.
Saturday's events will begin with a 20-minute Free Practice 3, followed by qualifying for Sunday's Grand Prix. All riders will participate in a 15-minute Grand Prix Q1, with the fastest 12 advancing to Q2, which is also 15 minutes.
The Sprint race will take place later on Saturday, using the grid established by Friday's Sprint qualifying. Sunday's traditional MotoGP warm-up will be eliminated. Instead, the pit lane will open for 10 minutes before the Grand Prix, allowing riders to perform multiple sighting laps.
These changes will align with new technical regulations in 2027, which include reducing engine capacity from 1,000cc to 850cc.
