Beirut:Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam stated that the country's sovereignty is incomplete unless decisions regarding war, peace, and national security are controlled solely by state institutions.
According to Anadolu Agency, Salam highlighted these points during the opening of an exhibition at the National Library in Beirut, celebrating the 100th anniversary of Lebanon's Constitution. He emphasized the importance of fully implementing the Taif Agreement and advancing the development of state institutions.
Salam noted that the Taif Agreement, signed in 1989, underlines Lebanon as a final homeland for all citizens, with an Arab identity and a democratic parliamentary system. This system is characterized by the separation, balance, and cooperation of powers. The agreement introduced fundamental principles into the Constitution's preamble, which have become integral to defining the Lebanese state.
The Prime Minister pointed out that the agreement serves as a blueprint for state-building and aims to abolish political sectarianism through a phased approach. He remarked on the significance of having a singular authority within state institutions to ensure true popular sovereignty and rule of law.
The Taif Agreement, which concluded a 15-year civil war in Lebanon, was facilitated by Saudi Arabia and other Arab nations. It aimed to redistribute political power among Lebanon's religious communities, promote political participation, and balance power between Christians and Muslims by adjusting the roles of the presidency, Council of Ministers, and Parliament.
