Irkutsk:The European Commission has issued an urgent call for Russia to provide detailed information regarding a reported plague case in Siberia, emphasizing the need for clarity to evaluate potential cross-border health risks.
According to Anadolu Agency, European Commission spokesperson Eva Hrncirova highlighted the necessity for Russia to promptly share plague-related information. This request was reiterated following a meeting with the World Health Organization (WHO), where further details from Russia were sought.
The case in question involves a community-acquired pneumonia diagnosis in an employee at the Irkutsk Scientific Research Anti-Plague Institute of Siberia and the Far East. An epidemiological investigation by Russian authorities has reportedly been conducted. However, more information is needed to assess the situation's epidemiological impact and potential international implications.
Hrncirova stressed the importance of Russia fulfilling its obligations as a WHO European Region member by providing timely and precise information. She noted that while the WHO remains the EU's primary point of contact, the organization is still awaiting clarification from Russia to adequately assess the situation.
