Doha:Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani has called for accountability over what he described as Israel's ongoing genocide in the Gaza Strip since October 2023. Speaking at the opening of the 55th annual session of Qatar's Shura Council, he emphasized that the perpetrators must not evade responsibility for the events in Gaza.
According to Anadolu Agency, Qatar has played a significant mediating role in efforts to end the conflict in Gaza. Despite these efforts, the situation remains dire with more than 74,000 Palestinians killed and over 175,000 injured since the conflict began, as reported by Palestinian authorities. Most of the victims have been women and children, and approximately 90% of Gaza's infrastructure has been devastated.
In November 2024, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, citing war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. The International Court of Justice is also addressing a case brought by South Africa and other countries accusing Israel of genocide against Palestinians.
Qatar, alongside Egypt and Trkiye, facilitated a ceasefire agreement that began on October 10, 2025, under a plan proposed by US President Donald Trump. However, the violence persists, with recent reports indicating that 1,493 Palestinians have been killed and 5,299 injured, predominantly women and children, according to Gaza's Health Ministry.
Additionally, Israel continues to restrict essential supplies into Gaza, affecting the 2.4 million Palestinians living there, of whom 2.15 million are displaced, amid worsening humanitarian conditions. Sheikh Tamim reaffirmed Qatar's commitment to working with international and regional partners to maintain stability and security in the region.
