Prosecutors Drop Key Impeachment Charges Against Philippines’ Vice President Duterte

Accra:Philippine House prosecutors have decided to drop three of the four impeachment articles against Vice President Sara Duterte, leaving only the charge of unexplained wealth to be addressed by the Senate impeachment court.

According to Anadolu Agency, the dropped charges involved alleged misuse of confidential funds and an alleged assassination plot. The Senate impeachment court accepted the withdrawal of these charges, allowing the trial to move forward with only the unexplained wealth charge.

Lead prosecutor Jinky Luistro stated, "Today, the prosecution respectfully manifests that it will no longer pursue three of them. It will stand on one, and that is article two on unexplained wealth." This decision means that Duterte's fate hinges solely on the accusation of possessing wealth that is unexplained and undeclared.

The withdrawal signifies a major reduction in the impeachment case, as two of the most prominent allegations, including misuse of confidential funds and grave threats against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., first lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, and former House Speaker Martin Romualdez, have been dropped.

If convicted on the remaining charge, Duterte could face disqualification from running for any public office, including the presidency, in the 2028 elections.
