Accra:University of Tennessee US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated that Iran must decide between abandoning its nuclear ambitions and reaching an agreement or facing severe military consequences.
According to Anadolu Agency – English, Hegseth made these remarks to Reserve Officers' Training Corps cadets and military recruits, emphasizing the need for Iran to make a swift decision about its nuclear program. He warned that the United States could and would deliver devastating military action if necessary.
Hegseth accused Iran of developing a substantial conventional missile arsenal to deter military intervention while continuing its pursuit of nuclear capabilities. He stressed that maintaining US military strength is vital for compelling adversaries to negotiate.
Furthermore, Hegseth pointed out that Iran provides funding to proxies such as Hezbollah and the Houthis in Yemen. He noted that the US has been working to prevent attacks on its forces and shipping routes.
Hegseth also linked the US policy on Iran to President Donald Trump's broader strategy of reasserting American power. This strategy includes confronting drug cartels and reducing the influence of Iran, China, and Russia in Latin America.
Discussing Venezuela, Hegseth mentioned that the US operation in the country would have long-term implications. He described Venezuela as a strategic partner, highlighting its oil resources, and explained that the US aims to push its rivals out of the Western Hemisphere while enhancing its military presence and alliances across the Americas.
