Zelenskyy Discusses Potential Continuation of Russia Sanctions Relief

Kyiv:Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed concerns that easing US sanctions against Russia might continue, following a recent diesel deal he described as merely a 'first step.'

According to Anadolu Agency – English, Zelenskyy spoke about the implications of sanctions relief, suggesting it would provide Russian President Vladimir Putin with a sense of support rather than encouraging him to end the conflict.

Zelenskyy's comments followed an executive order from US President Donald Trump, which suspended certain sanctions, restrictions, and tariffs on Russia as part of the Graham Act. Despite this, Zelenskyy remained hopeful that Trump would take actions to cease attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure.

Negotiations between Ukrainian and US representatives could occur as soon as this week, with Kyiv committed to discussions. A proposed trilateral meeting involving Ukraine, the US, and Russia is being considered, with potential venues including the US, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, or a European country. However, there has been no confirmation from Moscow or Washington.

Regarding alleged Starlink restrictions, Zelenskyy highlighted issues with terminals disconnecting at high speeds, which affects military operations. He noted ongoing discussions involving military officials and diplomats, though SpaceX has not engaged with the military.

Zelenskyy also mentioned European countries exploring alternatives to Starlink due to potential US-based access restrictions. On the topic of frozen Russian assets, he indicated that Kyiv is aware of Moscow's potential attempts to reclaim these assets through partners, but reassured that they remain secure under European control.

European partners have opposed the US-Russia diesel deal, agreeing that sanctions should continue while Russia maintains its attacks. Zelenskyy noted that a new sanctions package is being developed.
