Tokyo:Palestinian American comedian Sammy Obeid claimed that Japanese authorities denied him entry and detained him for nearly 24 hours, citing issues with his visa for planned stand-up shows in Tokyo.
According to Anadolu Agency – English, Obeid stated that upon arriving in Tokyo with two other comedians, he was held in a holding room for "security reasons" and questioned about his occupation and travel plans. Authorities informed him that he lacked the appropriate visa to work as an entertainer and demanded a detailed itinerary for his stay.
Obeid admitted partial responsibility for the visa oversight, explaining he could not secure the necessary sponsorship due to the small size of the venues. He noted that his performances were not directly compensated in Japan, with tickets sold through a US-based platform, leading him to believe entry would be permitted.
He was given the option to appeal the refusal but chose to leave instead, citing the lengthy process and continued confinement. During detention, Obeid claimed he was kept without basic amenities and his request to continue his tour to Hong Kong or Taiwan was denied. He has since canceled his performances in Japan and offered refunds or alternative options for ticket holders.
