China Unveils Space Governance Paper to Prevent Arms Race

Beijing:China has introduced a position paper focused on enhancing outer space governance, with an emphasis on preventing an arms race in space. The document highlights the necessity for space exploration achievements to benefit all nations and warns of the existing international legal framework's inadequacy in keeping pace with swift advancements in space science and technology.

According to Anadolu Agency – English, the paper outlines the risk of an arms race in outer space as a significant threat to space security, urging the strengthening of global space governance as a shared responsibility for humanity. It advocates for countries to prioritize common human values, respect sovereign equality, adhere to international law, practice multilateralism, and adopt a people-centered approach.

The paper also calls for a balanced strategy towards outer space development, security, stability, and sustainability to build a community with a shared future in space for all of humanity. This release follows comments by US Air Force Secretary Troy Meink regarding the US Space Force's capabilities in defending against hostile actions in space.

China's position paper encourages international cooperation, equitable access to space, and opposes military policies that might lead to an arms race. It stresses the importance of transparency, regulation of commercial space activities, and the UN's role in global space governance.

Additionally, the paper advocates for non-discriminatory access to outer space, opposing activities that threaten states' sovereignty and security. It reaffirms the principle of avoiding armed conflict in space by preventing the threat or use of force against space objects.

On the same day, China launched a remote sensing satellite from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center in Shanxi Province. The satellite is intended for land surveys, crop yield estimation, and disaster prevention and relief.
