Iranian Navy Reports Oil Tanker Fire After Mine Strike Near Strait of Hormuz

Tehran:An oil tanker caught fire after striking naval mines east of the Strait of Hormuz, according to a statement by the Iranian Navy on Tuesday.

According to Anadolu Agency – English, the tanker had reportedly turned off its tracking systems and was navigating through what was described as a 'restricted and unsafe' area when it encountered the mines. The incident caused damage to the vessel, resulting in a fire.

The Iranian Navy's statement did not specify the identity, flag, crew, or any potential casualties related to the tanker. However, the Navy emphasized that the Strait of Hormuz is considered 'unsafe and closed' to vessels attempting to pass without proper coordination. Ships are advised to coordinate with Iran's armed forces to ensure safe passage.

This incident occurs amidst ongoing diplomatic efforts to resolve tensions involving Iran and the United States. Regional countries such as Türkiye, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Iran have been engaged in discussions aimed at reducing tensions and supporting a lasting settlement.

Washington and Tehran had previously signed a memorandum of understanding in June, which initiated negotiations. However, these talks collapsed due to disagreements over navigation rights through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for energy supplies and goods.
