New York:The UN General Assembly has adopted a resolution calling for the end of the economic, commercial, and financial embargo imposed by the United States against Cuba. The resolution was supported by 130 countries, including Türkiye, while 17 countries, such as the US, Israel, Ukraine, Argentina, and the United Arab Emirates, opposed it. Additionally, 25 countries chose to abstain from the vote.
According to Anadolu Agency – English, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla addressed the assembly before the vote, emphasizing the embargo's impact on the daily lives of Cubans. He highlighted shortages of fuel, medicines, food, and other essential goods, stating that the blockade poses a significant threat rather than Cuba itself. Rodriguez stressed that the effects of the embargo are felt directly by Cuban families and patients in hospitals.
In response, US Representative Mike Waltz dismissed the Cuban government's portrayal of the sanctions, attributing Cuba's economic challenges primarily to its own governmental policies. The resolution passed by the UN General Assembly is non-binding and acts as a recommendation, reflecting the international community's stance. The US embargo on Cuba, initially introduced in 1960, has been expanded over the years, despite repeated calls from the UN since 2012 for its termination.
