Tehran:Countries in the region are capable of ensuring their own security through cooperation without US involvement, said Iran's president on Thursday.
According to Anadolu Agency – English, speaking at an event marking a local holiday, Masoud Pezeshkian addressed regional issues and called for closer cooperation among neighboring countries, according to a statement from the Iranian presidency.
Pezeshkian emphasized the importance of unity among regional countries, stating, "We are brothers with all the countries around us, and we are all Muslims. Therefore, we can help one another and ensure the security of our region." He further argued that regional countries do not require the presence of the US, which he accused of presenting itself as a necessary force for regional security.
The Iranian president also criticized Washington's military spending and alleged violations, illustrating the ongoing tensions between Tehran and Washington. These tensions have been exacerbated by the conflict that began on February 28, involving attacks between the US, Israel, and Iran.
A framework agreement was signed between Washington and Tehran on June 18, which initiated negotiations. However, these talks collapsed due to disagreements over the freedom and security of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial passage for global energy and goods shipments.
