Paris:French authorities have initiated 83 investigations into alleged police and gendarmerie misconduct associated with the recent high school protest movement, as reported by broadcaster Franceinfo on Friday.
According to Anadolu Agency – English, these investigations have been delegated to the General Inspectorate of the National Police and the General Inspectorate of the National Gendarmerie. These bodies are tasked with examining the conduct within the respective forces.
The investigations coincide with ongoing demonstrations and school blockades happening throughout France as part of a larger student mobilization. The cases were referred to the inspectorates since the inception of the protest movement.
Despite government concessions concerning education funding, staffing, and university admissions, further nationwide demonstrations are scheduled for Saturday. In response, Paris police have reinstated a partial nighttime curfew for the All Saints' Day holiday weekend.
The curfew will be in effect from 11 pm to 6 am local time on the nights of October 31-November 1 and November 1-2. It will cover the central pedestrian area of Place de la Republique and the area surrounding Canopee des Halles in central Paris. Notably, the curfew exempts residents able to verify their residency within or near the restricted zones, workers needing to cross these areas, and public service personnel.
This curfew reimplementation follows the lifting of restrictions earlier this week that were initially imposed after violence and looting during the October 17-18 protests.
