German Metalworkers Persist with Strikes Over Wage and Job Security Concerns

Stuttgart:Metal and electrical industry workers in Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany, continued their warning strikes on Tuesday, focusing on demands for higher wages and job security. The protest saw employees, including those from Bosch, gather in the Feuerbach district of Stuttgart, following walkouts at various locations on Monday.

According to Anadolu Agency – English, the union IG Metall Stuttgart estimated that approximately 1,000 employees participated in the joint rally. Workers from the automotive supplier Mahle were also invited to join, although company operations reportedly remained unaffected.

The industrial action commenced on Monday with walkouts at the medical technology company Aesculap in Tuttlingen. This move comes after two rounds of collective bargaining failed to result in an agreement. IG Metall is pushing for a 5% wage increase over 12 months, alongside job and production site guarantees.

During the latest negotiation round, employers proposed a one-time payment next year and a 1.3% wage increase starting in July 2028, citing economic challenges and high industry costs as reasons for their offer. Further negotiations are scheduled for Thursday in Ludwigsburg.

Barbara Resch, the district manager of IG Metall, emphasized that the union would not accept superficial solutions. She stated that true job security should not come at the expense of workers or by undermining collective bargaining standards. Resch highlighted the importance of Thursday's talks in determining employers' genuine commitment to securing the future of jobs in the region.
