Israeli Opposition Leader Gadi Eisenkot Aims to Form National Emergency Government

Jerusalem:Israeli opposition leader Gadi Eisenkot announced plans on Tuesday for the "change bloc" to swiftly establish a "national emergency government". This initiative includes electing a new parliament speaker and advancing critical legislation.

According to Anadolu Agency – English, Eisenkot, who leads the Yashar party, made these remarks after a meeting with opposition leaders. The opposition's legislative goals include enacting significant laws and repealing those perceived as threats to democracy.

The meeting, the first since the October 27 parliamentary elections, saw participation from key figures such as former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett of the Together party, Yisrael Beytenu leader Avigdor Lieberman, Yair Golan of the Democrats, and opposition leader Yair Lapid. These leaders discussed forming negotiating teams to establish common principles and implement their agenda in the Knesset.

In the recent elections, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's bloc won 53 seats in the 120-member Knesset, while the opposition secured 48 seats, with Arab parties claiming 19. The opposition, lacking the 61-seat majority needed to form a government on its own, may need the support of Arab lawmakers to achieve this goal.
