Washington:Residents of Washington, DC, framed Tuesday's midterm elections largely as a verdict on President Donald Trump, with most hoping Democrats retake Congress while some backed Trump's immigration crackdown.
According to Anadolu Agency – English, George Olson expressed that the most crucial issue is limiting Trump's power, stating that he wants Congress to control federal spending rather than serve as "a rubber stamp for anything he wants to do." Olson's main hope is for a Democratic takeover of Congress and the Senate, as he believes the American people are tired of Trump.
Susan Sarfati, 85, highlighted the importance of having an administration that cares about the people and respects immigrants for their contributions. While acknowledging the significance of economic issues like gas and food prices, she emphasized the need for a caring and non-corrupt administration. Sarfati is optimistic about Democratic success in the House of Representatives, the Senate, and gubernatorial races.
Conversely, Dorothey, 67, cited immigration as her deciding issue and expressed support for Trump, stating concerns about crime associated with immigrants. Although she usually leans Democrat, she is voting for Trump to address illegal immigration.
Jeffrey Manzer, 66, described the vote as a referendum on the Trump administration, emphasizing the need to "put the brakes on what's been going on nationally." He also pointed out the lack of voting representation for DC residents in Congress and called for the defense of democracy both nationally and within the district.
Americans are voting for all 435 seats in the House of Representatives, 35 of the 100 Senate seats, and 36 governorships, with control of Congress for the second half of Trump's term at stake. Republicans hold narrow majorities, and Democrats need a net gain of three seats in the House and four in the Senate to take control. The District of Columbia has no senators and is represented in the House by a non-voting delegate.
