Herzliya:Israeli opposition leaders have united to recommend Yashar party head Gadi Eisenkot to President Isaac Herzog for the formation of the next government. This move aims to establish a 'national emergency government' to replace Benjamin Netanyahu's current administration.
According to Anadolu Agency – English, the agreement among opposition leaders was reached during a joint meeting in Herzliya. The leaders plan to present their recommendation to Herzog as consultations at his residence are set to begin. They are committed to quickly drafting policy guidelines and coalition agreements necessary to form the new cabinet.
The opposition is striving for a 'clear parliamentary majority' in the Knesset, seeking to avoid another election and form a Zionist government. They have affirmed their commitment to respecting the electorate's decision, which they perceive as a call for change. The Knesset is scheduled to convene on November 10, with plans to elect a new speaker to replace incumbent Amir Ohana of the Likud party.
Opposition leaders have criticized a campaign by Likud and Netanyahu to delegitimize the election results. They expressed their resolve to defend the results and the Central Elections Committee. Their recommendation to the president aims to expedite the government formation process to spare Israel another election.
The meeting, attended by leaders such as Naftali Bennett, Avigdor Lieberman, Yair Golan, and Yair Lapid, marks the first joint gathering since the October 27 elections. The elections resulted in Netanyahu's bloc securing 53 seats in the 120-member Knesset, with the opposition and Arab parties holding 48 and 19 seats, respectively. The opposition's path to a parliamentary majority hinges on potential support from Arab lawmakers.
