AFC Postpones 2027 Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia Due to Regional Tensions

Riyadh:The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has announced the postponement of the 2027 Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia by nearly a year, citing security concerns and travel disruptions linked to regional tensions.

According to Anadolu Agency – English, the tournament, which was initially set for January 7 to February 5, 2027, will now take place from December 23, 2027, to January 21, 2028, pending FIFA approval.

The AFC stated that the decision was made after consultations with Saudi organizers due to "current exceptional circumstances arising from developments in the region" and the logistical and travel challenges affecting teams, officials, and supporters. This decision follows recent Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, which have cast doubt on the feasibility of hosting major sporting events in the region.

AFC President Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa had previously indicated that the tournament could be delayed if necessary. Despite this, organizers had been maintaining that preparations were on schedule. The AFC had only recently, on October 26, finalized the kickoff times and venues for the tournament.

Saudi Arabia was scheduled to open the competition against Palestine at King Fahd Sports City Stadium in Riyadh. The 2027 Asian Cup marks the first time Saudi Arabia will host the continent's premier men's international football competition, with matches planned in Riyadh, Jeddah, and Al Khobar.
