African Union and Somalia Denounce Deadly Attack in Nigeria’s Zamfara State

Zamfara: The African Union and Somalia on Monday strongly condemned a deadly attack in Nigeria's northwestern Zamfara state that resulted in the death of at least 50 civilians and the abduction of women and children.

According to Anadolu Agency, AU Commission Chair Mahmoud Ali Youssouf expressed full solidarity with the government and people of Nigeria, extending heartfelt condolences through an AU statement.

The statement emphasized the AU's firm rejection of terrorism and violent extremism, especially against civilians such as women and children, labeling such acts as severe human rights violations and significant threats to peace, security, and stability. Youssouf called for the immediate, safe, and unconditional release of all abducted women and children and urged for stronger, coordinated actions to protect civilians and prevent future atrocities. He reaffirmed the AU's unwavering support for Nigeria's efforts to tackle insecurity and restore lasting peace.

In a similar vein, Somalia's Foreign Ministry issued a statement expressing solidarity with the Nigerian government and its people, offering condolences to the victims' families. Mogadishu called for the immediate and unconditional release of all abductees and voiced support for Nigeria's pursuit of justice against those responsible. The ministry highlighted the necessity for Africa to remain united against terrorism and in the protection of civilians.

The assault, perpetrated by armed groups known locally as bandits, began on Thursday night and extended into Friday morning. Attackers on motorcycles set buildings ablaze and fired upon residents of the village of Tungan Dutse as they attempted to escape. Nigeria has been grappling with persistent insecurity, particularly in the northwest region where Zamfara is located. The area has been plagued by bandit attacks, kidnappings, and killings, which have displaced thousands and left many more at risk.

The Nigerian government has deployed troops and collaborated with international partners, including the US, for technical support and intelligence sharing. Despite these efforts, authorities continue to face overlapping threats from armed criminal gangs and insurgent groups.
