AI Used in 55% of Reported Cybercrimes in Africa: Interpol

Interpol: Artificial intelligence was used in 55% of reported cybercrimes in Africa, according to an Interpol report. The International Criminal Police Organization's Africa Cyberthreat Assessment Report 2026, published Monday, highlighted how AI enabled cyberattacks to be executed more rapidly, on a larger scale, and in ways that were more difficult to detect.

According to Anadolu Agency, the report, which was based on data from 36 African countries, revealed that financial losses due to cybercrime had more than doubled since 2024, escalating from $192 million to $484 million. Online fraud was identified as the most frequently reported type of cybercrime in Africa in 2025. Attackers exploited mobile money platforms, social media, and AI to extend their reach to a larger number of individuals.

The report did not provide a specific country-by-country ranking of cybercrime prevalence but noted regional trends. East Africa emerged as a hub for fraud targeting mobile payment systems and ransomware attacks. Meanwhile, West and Central Africa were highlighted as regions where business email compromise (BEC) scams and online romance fraud were concentrated.

The Southern Africa subregion has become a significant target for international cybercrime groups, attributed to its high level of digital connectivity. The report also indicated the increasing commonality of AI-powered deepfake content in cases of digital extortion and online harassment.

In response to these challenges, Senegal launched an online reporting platform in 2025 to address online violations targeting children. Additionally, 17 African countries strengthened their cybercrime legislation that year. Interpol's coordinated international operations led to the apprehension of over 1,500 suspects, the seizure of hundreds of digital devices, and the confiscation of more than $100 million in criminal proceeds.

The report advocated for stronger cooperation among countries, AI training for law enforcement agencies, and enhanced public-private partnerships as vital strategies to combat cybercrime.
