Air Defenses Intercept Seven Drones Over Erbil Amid Escalating Tensions

Erbil: Air defense systems successfully intercepted seven unidentified drones overnight, preventing them from reaching targets within Erbil, the capital of Iraq's Kurdistan Region. The drones, described as 'suicide drones' by local media, were shot down before they could execute their intended attacks. The origin of the drones remains undisclosed, and authorities have not reported any casualties or material damage resulting from the interceptions.

According to Anadolu Agency, in a separate incident on Sunday, a rocket and a drone attacked the Azadi Camp in the Koya (Koy Sanjaq) area of Erbil. The camp, affiliated with the Iranian Kurdish Democratic Party and home to the families of party members, was targeted but reported no casualties. The Kurdish Regional Government of Iraq has yet to release an official statement regarding these incidents.

Tensions in the region have intensified following a joint offensive by the US and Israel against Iran on February 28, which resulted in over 1,340 deaths, including that of the then-supreme leader, Ali Khamenei. In response, Tehran has conducted drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf countries hosting US military assets. Additionally, Iran has imposed restrictions on the movement of ships through the Strait of Hormuz.
