New york: The American Jewish Committee has expressed 'deep apprehension' at Israel's decision to proceed with a full military takeover of Gaza City.

According to Anadolu Agency, in a written statement, the group warned that "the profound risks posed by a full military takeover of Gaza City cannot be overlooked," as it "could endanger the lives of the remaining hostages and may well lead to substantial casualties among both Israeli soldiers and Palestinian civilians." The American Jewish Committee urged the sponsors of last month's New York Declaration, which favored a two-state solution, to apply maximum pressure for a ceasefire agreement and "fulfill the very goals that the Declaration endorsed."

The organization describes itself on its website as the "global advocacy organization for the Jewish people," emphasizing its commitment to "upholding the democratic values that unite Jews and our allies."

On Friday, Israel's Security Cabinet approved a plan by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to fully occupy Gaza City. The decision has added to the mounting international concern over Israel's actions in the region.

The United Nations has reported that 87% of Gaza's territory is already under "Israeli control" or subject to evacuation orders. Any further expansion is expected to have "catastrophic consequences," exacerbating an already dire humanitarian situation.

Israel has been under increasing scrutiny and criticism for its military campaign in Gaza, which has resulted in the deaths of more than 61,000 people since October 2023. The ongoing conflict has devastated the enclave, pushing it to the brink of famine.

Further complicating the situation, last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Additionally, Israel faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice related to its actions in the enclave.
