Baku:London Amnesty International has issued a warning regarding the significant escalation of state-backed Israeli violence in the occupied West Bank, describing it as an attempt to "ethnically cleanse" Palestinians from the region. The organization emphasized that these attacks are not isolated incidents but part of a "central policy of the Israeli state."
According to Anadolu Agency – English, the London-based rights group has called on international governments to impose sanctions on Israeli officials implicated in serious violations of international law. Amnesty International also urged a ban on trade with illegal Israeli settlements and demanded a halt to the supply of weapons and security equipment to Israel.
The statement highlighted recent attacks by Israeli occupiers on Palestinian farmers, as well as European diplomats and an American photojournalist from The Washington Post. Heba Morayef, Amnesty International's Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa, criticized the exponential rise in state-driven settler violence, which she said aims to ethnically cleanse Palestinians from the West Bank.
Morayef pointed out the international community's failure to take meaningful action against the system enabling the oppression of Palestinians. She urged states to fulfill their obligations under international law and avoid complicity in violations against Palestinians.
Amnesty International further called for an end to all forms of trade, investment, and cooperation that contribute to maintaining the occupation, apartheid, and ethnic cleansing campaign. Morayef also criticized attempts by senior Israeli officials and election candidates to portray the violence as isolated actions by individuals, describing these portrayals as distortions of the truth given the "state-sponsored brutality."
The West Bank, including East Jerusalem, has been occupied by Israel since 1967, with Israeli settlements in the area deemed illegal under international law.
