Annual decrease of registered unemployed by 13.9% in June 2024

There was a 13.9% annual decline in the number of registered unemployed in June 2024, according to data published on Tuesday by the Statistical Service of Cyprus. Specifically, according to official data, the number of registered unemployed at the end of June 2024 reached 10,112 people based on data kept at the District Labour Offices. Based on seasonally adjusted data, which show the trend in unemployment, the number of registered unemployed in June 2024 increased to 10,959 compared to 10,839 in the previous month. A press release by the Statistical Office said that compared to June 2023, there was a decrease of 1,635 persons or 13.9% attributed mainly to the sectors of financial and insurance activities, trade, construction, accommodation and food services, as well as a decrease of people who entered the labour market. It is added that the number of registered unemployed refers to persons over 15 years of age who apply to the District and Local Labour Offices of the Labour Department to find a job and a re registered as unemployed, and that these persons must be able and available for work and must be actively seeking jobs. "The monthly number of registered unemployed refers to persons who on the last day of each month have an active job search application," it is noted. It is also mentioned that the number of registered unemployed does not include self-employed persons, persons looking for part-time work, as well as persons looking for work in a specific region or with a specific employer. At the same time, it is clarified that seasonal adjustment is a statistical technique that removes the effect of seasonality from a time series, thus making the actual trend in the change in a variable more visible. In addition, it is reported that according to an update from the Department of Labour, as of Tuesday, June 15, 2021, the automatic renewal of registrations was terminated and the online platform of the Public Employment Service was activated to allow the registration of a new job application, its renewal, as well as the registration of a vacancy. This arrangement may affect the comparison of monthly unemployment data recorded through this process with the data recorded by the previous procedures, it is noted. Source: Cyprus News Agency
