Tel aviv: Another Israeli soldier has succumbed to injuries following a suicide attempt, marking the latest in a series of soldier suicides linked to the ongoing Gaza conflict, according to the Israeli army.
According to Anadolu Agency, Dan Phillipson, a combat soldier in training originally from Norway, attempted to take his own life by gunfire at a training base in southern Israel. The army confirmed that Phillipson died from severe injuries sustained in the incident after being transferred to a hospital.
Israeli media reports indicate that four soldiers have taken their lives in the past two weeks, with a total of 19 suicides among soldiers recorded since the beginning of the year. Haaretz reported in May that 42 soldiers have died by suicide since the onset of Israel's military actions in the Gaza Strip in October 2023.
The conflict has led to devastating humanitarian consequences in the Gaza Strip, resulting in nearly 59,000 Palestinian deaths, predominantly women and children. The military campaign has severely damaged the enclave, leading to a collapsed health system and acute food shortages.
In response to the situation, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants last November for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, citing war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice related to its military actions in the region.
