Arab League Calls for International Investigation into Alleged Torture at Israeli Prison

Ramla:The Arab League has made a strong appeal for an independent international investigation into allegations of torture and systematic abuse of Palestinians from Gaza held in Israel's Ramla Prison. The organization is demanding accountability for those responsible for the alleged mistreatment.

According to Anadolu Agency – English, the Arab League's statement condemned the repeated assaults in the prison's Rakevet wing, which it claims have resulted in detainees suffering injuries and burns. The practices were described as violations of international humanitarian law, including breaches of the Geneva Conventions and the Convention against Torture, and were labeled as 'crimes against humanity.'

The Arab League has called for an immediate cessation of the abuse and has urged Israel to grant unrestricted access to the International Committee of the Red Cross and independent monitors to document conditions and provide medical care in the facility. Additionally, they have demanded the immediate release of sick and wounded prisoners and an end to what they describe as arbitrary detention.

The statement from the Arab League followed a report by the Palestinian Prisoners' Media Office on October 27, which detailed recurring assaults against Gaza detainees in the Rakevet wing. These assaults reportedly occurred on Fridays and Saturdays and involved the use of batons, pepper spray, gas, rubber bullets, and stun grenades. The report also claimed that guards used police dogs and took detainees to rooms without surveillance cameras, where they were further assaulted.

The Arab League has urged the international community, along with the UN Human Rights Council and the UN General Assembly, to take action to protect Palestinian prisoners and end impunity. As of now, there has been no immediate response from Israeli authorities regarding the statement. Ramla Prison is located in central Israel and is managed by the Israel Prison Service.
