Manama: Arab foreign ministers on Tuesday demanded that Iran pay compensation for damage caused by Iranian attacks on Arab countries and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. This resolution was passed during an emergency Arab League meeting held via video conference, chaired by Bahrain.
According to Anadolu Agency, the resolution asserts that Iran bears "full international responsibility" for attacks targeting Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, and Iraq. It insists that Iran is obligated under international law to provide "full reparation" for all resulting losses and damages. The resolution also condemned Iran's closure of the Strait of Hormuz and threats to shut the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, deeming these actions as violations of international law and the principle of freedom of navigation.
Bahrain's Foreign Minister, Abdullatif Al Zayani, stated that Iran's actions have disrupted maritime traffic, threatened energy security, and affected the supply of food and medicines. He emphasized that these actions have harmed global trade and the world economy. Al Zayani further insisted that Tehran must be held accountable for the consequences of closing the Strait of Hormuz to international navigation.
The demand for compensation comes after Iran earlier sought reparations from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE, Bahrain, and Jordan, claiming these countries participated in the war against Tehran. The tensions in the region have been heightened since the U.S. and Israel launched joint strikes on Iran on February 28, leading to retaliatory strikes from Tehran on Israel and other regional countries hosting U.S. assets.
Efforts to de-escalate the situation have seen Pakistan hosting a first round of peace talks after brokering a two-week ceasefire on April 8. With the ceasefire now extended, efforts to convene a second round of negotiations continue.
