New York: Argentina has officially withdrawn from the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), as announced by the UN on Tuesday. The decision comes amidst a backdrop of increasing conflict in the region, adding to the complexities faced by international peacekeeping forces. According to Anadolu Agency, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, the assistant secretary-general for peace operations at the UN, confirmed Argentina's withdrawal during a press conference at the UN headquarters in New York. Lacroix noted that the decision to pull out of UNIFIL, which has faced several attacks in Lebanon, was made by Argentina as a sovereign choice. He stated, "It's the prerogative of any member state to make that decision." UNIFIL spokesperson Andrea Tenenti corroborated this development at a UN press briefing, stating, "That's correct. Argentina has asked its officers to go back." He assured that the operational capabilities of UNIFIL remain unaffected despite the withdrawal of three Argentinian officers. Tenenti emphasized that no other countries have requested to withdraw their peacekeepers, reaffirming the commitment of other member states to the mission. The specific reasons for Argentina's withdrawal were not disclosed in their official request, leaving room for speculation regarding motivations.
