Canberra: Australia on Sunday formally recognized the statehood of Palestine, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said. 'Effective today, Sunday the 21st of September 2025, the Commonwealth of Australia formally recognizes the independent and sovereign State of Palestine,' Albanese announced in a statement shared on US social media company X.
According to Anadolu Agency, Albanese mentioned that this recognition acknowledges the legitimate and long-held aspirations of the Palestinian people for statehood. The decision aligns with similar moves by Canada and the United Kingdom, as part of a coordinated international effort to rejuvenate the two-state solution.
The recognition of Palestine's statehood occurs amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza, where the Israeli war has resulted in the deaths of over 65,200 Palestinians, predominantly women and children, since October 7, 2023.
