Australia Pledges Continued Support for Ukraine Amid Global Tensions: Premier

Ankara: Australia will stand with Ukraine regardless of its relationship with the US and Russia, said the Australian premier, according to local media Wednesday.

According to Anadolu Agency, Australian Premier Anthony Albanese reaffirmed Australia's unwavering support for Ukraine during a Q+A session with ABC News. Albanese emphasized that Australia's stance remains consistent, stating, "Australia's position is unequivocal. It's the same as it was last week and last month."

Albanese highlighted Australia's contribution of $1.5 billion to Ukraine, underscoring the importance of supporting democracy and the international rule of law. He warned of the broader implications for global politics if Russia is allowed to proceed with what he described as "an unlawful invasion of a sovereign nation."

The premier also addressed Australia's security ties, noting that the US would defend Australia under the ANZUS agreement, a collective security treaty signed in 1951 between Australia, New Zealand, and the United States.

In a display of unified support, Foreign Minister Penny Wong, alongside Albanese and Defense Minister Richard Marles, issued a joint statement on the third anniversary of the Russia-Ukraine war. The statement included an announcement of new sanctions against Russia, further solidifying Australia's commitment to Ukraine's sovereignty.
