Accra:Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has criticized the proposed livestreaming of a US firing squad execution, describing it as 'abhorrent.'
According to Anadolu Agency, Albanese expressed his concerns during an interview with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). He emphasized that broadcasting such an event would harm reputations and pledged that his government would take steps to prevent Australians from viewing it.
Albanese acknowledged the complexity of blocking the broadcast, saying, "These things are not as simple as turning off a light switch and we will do what we can to shut it down." He further commented on his personal convictions, stating, "I find it abhorrent that anyone would want to watch something like this."
The remarks were made following an announcement by US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, who indicated that Nidal Hasan, responsible for a 2009 shooting at Fort Hood, Texas, would be executed by firing squad on December 3 at the same Army base. Hasan was convicted in 2013 of multiple counts of murder and attempted murder and is currently held at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.
The Pentagon revealed that President Donald Trump had approved the execution recommendation on Monday.
