Azerbaijan’s SOCAR and Syria Sign MoU for Natural Gas Supply

Baku: Azerbaijan's state oil company SOCAR has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Syrian government to supply natural gas to Syria, marking a significant step in energy collaboration between the two nations.

According to Anadolu Agency, the MoU was signed by Azerbaijan's Economy Minister and SOCAR's Supervisory Board Chairman Mikayil Jabbarov, alongside Syrian Energy Minister Mohammed al-Bashir. The agreement aims to foster energy independence and strategic partnerships beneficial to both countries.

Syrian Energy Minister Bashir, who accompanied President Ahmad Al-Sharaa on an official visit to Azerbaijan, highlighted the discussions on enhancing cooperation in natural gas. Bashir expressed gratitude towards the agreement with SOCAR, stating it as a crucial move towards securing Syria's energy future.

Earlier this month, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan relayed a message from Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, indicating Azerbaijan's readiness to support Syria's natural gas needs. The visit marked Sharaa's first official trip to Azerbaijan since taking office.

Azeri President Aliyev noted that the previous Syrian administration's unfriendly policies led to stagnation in bilateral relations. However, he acknowledged the new Syrian government's potential to enhance these ties.

President Sharaa expressed appreciation for Azerbaijan's support, emphasizing Syria's eagerness to collaborate in various sectors like politics, economy, trade, culture, and humanitarian efforts. The leaders also discussed educational and cultural cooperation, including scholarships for Syrian students and cultural monument restoration.

Sharaa's visit is part of his broader diplomatic mission to reconnect Syria with the global community. Since his appointment on January 29, he has engaged with several countries, including Turkey, France, and the Gulf states.

The transitional administration under Sharaa was established in January following the ousting of Bashar Assad, who had governed Syria for nearly 25 years before fleeing to Russia, thus ending the Baath Party's long-standing rule since 1963.
